Products
Ryan McDonald is a Chicago-based photographer and ceramic artist trained at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His focus is on commercial and interior photography, while also creating one-of-a-kind functional and sculptural smoke-fired ceramics. These pieces were hand-thrown and smoke-fired for several days to achieve the textures, colors, and scents of the final products. This 30,000 year-old-process consists of a fire built from wood shavings, sawdust, and salt. All elements are combined with the ceramic pieces in a kiln., ignited and left to smolder. Patterns of trapped carbon and fumes from the smoke impart subtle color variations and mark each vessel in a way that cannot be duplicated.
