Vintage Royal Doulton TITANIAN Glaze SWAN Bud VASE Signed F Henri
Here is a vase made by Royal Doulton in the experimental Titanian glaze. Titanian contains titanian oxide and was developed by C.J. Noke and his team, along with other glazes, Flambé, Chang and Chinese Jade, in their quest to restore ancient Chinese glazes. Titanian glazes were produced between 1915 and 1930. This example is hand painted with a swan and either a baby swan or a duck – I’m not sure that swans are ever brown, unless this is some type of artistic license. The scene is signed “F. Henri” – F. Henri was one of Doulton’s most respected artists. It measures 4” in height and about 4 1/2” in diameter – it weighs 8.7 oz. It is in very good condition except for a small indent at the front of the base that looks like it is original to the making of the piece – the glaze color is still present as are some brush strokes over the indented/chipped area (see last two close-up photos). This is fairly minor damage and shouldn’t bother anyone too greatly as it didn’t appear to bother the artist. The piece is impressed on the underside with the number 1356, hand incised with 775A, also impressed with the number 17 and hand inscribed with the number 1.885. It is marked with the Royal Doulton backstamp used between 1902 and 1922. This is a very desirable Royal Doulton Titanian glaze vase, hand painted by one of their leading artists – a wonderful addition to a collection!
