Pair Of Dresden Porcelain Porcelain Rococo German Vases

Pair Of Dresden Porcelain Porcelain Rococo German Vases

These wonderful Dresden porcelain vases are exceptional examples of the organic forms, natural subject matter and charming flamboyance of the German Rococo. Each vase displays a stunning array of applied porcelain flowers on its exterior, arranged to give the impression that it is the vases themselves which are blossoming. They are a product of the 19th century, at which time Dresden porcelain was fast becoming established as a leading centre of porcelain production, and distinct from the nearby town of Meissen. These vases were produced at the Carl Thieme Porcelain Manufactory, perhaps the leading maker in Dresden at the time. Each vase is painted with cartouches showing Watteau-style figures in a landscape on a white ground, and elsewhere decorated with brightly-coloured flowers arranged in vines, as well as applied models of putti and crowns. They are set on square shaped bases and are surmounted by removable covers, all decorated similarly. There are underglaze marks for Carl Thieme on each vase.

The two gilt flying playful cherubs holding wreaths are applied to the Bleu Celeste porcelain neck, above an ovoid body painted on both sides, the front is centered with a hand painted oval medallion with gold trace depicting a French romantic scene, the back depicting a floral still-life scene, flanked by two gold banded porcelain handles, on square base.
