This beautiful ivory colored coil vase is about 10 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide. It’s made with white clay and the exterior is finished with burnished cream Terra sigillata. It was then washed with oxides to create a smooth ivory-like surface that looks like scrimshaw. The interior is finished with a matching creamy white glaze that echos the exterior surface very nicely. The base is coiled and smoothed, then each individual pattern in the surface is created by rolling out a piece of clay and shaping it into the motif. The individual motifs are then placed randomly and filled around with more coils and shapes, and the inside smoothed together to lock it all in place. The overall shape gradually develops as each piece is added. Once the piece is completed (a process done over several days as the finished areas must dry slightly in order to support the next area constructed) it is allowed to dry very slowly. This piece had cream colored Terra sigillata applied and burnished before the first firing, then after the firing the exterior was washed with oxides and the interior glazed. A second firing to stoneware temperatures finishes off the piece.

This scrumptious exposed coil bowl or vase is made by shaping individual coils and balls of clay then combining them to form unique motifs that are fused together by smoothing the inside of the bowl. The exterior is glazed with several brown glazes that combine to give flashes of green, blue and red. The interior is finished with a light matte green glaze and a dark transparent glossy green glaze with bits of blue and streaks of brown. It measures 6 inches wide and just under 6 inches tall. This piece can be used to quickly dress up a plastic flower pot and make a unique center piece, filled with special items for use in your home, or displayed on its own as a fascinating example of coil work. Like most of my work, this piece is hand built (meaning no pottery wheel was used), dried, fired, glazed, then fired again to create a piece that is water proof and tough. The glazes used in this piece are non-toxic, however because of texture, it is not recommended for food use.
